Is it possible to unpick and reweave the socially constructed gender stereo types supported by many of the seminal works from the Western visual art canon?
My inquiry has led me to believe that patriarchy is responsible for creating the oppressive effects of both inter and intra gender hierarchies. However, I have not been able to acquire the analytical knowledge required to negotiate a substantial nor expediated difference. The work generated in the studio therefore, is my voice. It is my attempt to question not only the boundaries inflicted by those in social power, but also the ideals that we as individuals choose to accept and live by. Projects from the studio are an analysis and re-interpretation of iconic artworks from the Canon, with Manet’s portentous paintingLe Déjeuner sur l’herbebeing seminal, both as an artwork and a research document.
